There are several ways I can support you as parents, carers or as a family. Here is a brief outline of each of the different types of support I can offer you.
If you have any questions or would like me to think about a different way of supporting you, please feel free to send me an email and we can make a time to chat.
One-off drop-in sessions
Can be offered to you as an existing client at Creating Calm, or as a previous client. These can be booked at any time via my online diary – subject to availability. They are charged for at my normal session rate and are paid for at the time of booking. This will generate a Zoom link, but you are welcome to come in person – please email me to let me know this is what you would like to do when you have booked the session, and this will mean I can make sure to have the kettle on!
If you are new to Creating Calm and would like a one-off session, please
‘Pick my Brains’ sessions
Are offered to existing clients and are usually 15 min appointments to discuss a quick question or something we need to talk about we have already discussed in a session. These are complimentary and you may book a maximum of two during an episode of 20 therapy sessions.
‘Hello’ sessions
Are booked for individual therapy or counselling clients after we have discussed the best way of working together. They are a quick in-person meeting at the studio to allow the client to meet me and my therapy dog, Orca, see the studio and ask any questions they have before we start therapy together.
‘Ad hoc’ sessions
Enable existing clients to move their session on a one-off basis, e.g. for illness, medical appointment, school trip etc. Please ensure you cancel via email the normal session you would have at least 48 hrs in advance, or you will be charged for both sessions! If in doubt, please email or text me about it in the first instance.
All of these sessions can be booked via my online diary which is available here or you can go to creatingcalm.setmore.com/bookclass.
Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP)
Was created by Debi Maskell-Graham and it is a playful ten-step model that helps parents and carers be ‘change agents’ in their own families. PCAP helps parents and carers to strengthen their relationships with their child/ren and enjoy spending time with their child/ren wherever they are. PCAP supports the adults around the child and is adult only sessions, and is designed to help them enhance their play, containment and reflective functioning skills and establish a weekly ‘you and me’ time with their child/ren at home. PCAP sessions involve just the adult/s and the therapist in sessions, not the child.
Parents as Partners
Is a component of TraumaPlay that is focused on working with parents. It looks at parenting styles and reflects on the ways to best support everyone in the family dynamic. This element of family support works with the adults around the child or teen and can be used to support the whole family alongside separate work with the child or the teen. Parents as Partners supports the adults around the child and is adult only sessions, often done alongside or after child or teen therapy but it can be a ‘stand-alone’ for adults wanting to reflect on how they parent or care for children and young people. Parents as Partner sessions involve just the adult/s and the therapist in sessions, not the child.
Filial Therapy
Is an approach that teaches parents (or other adults) to support their child or teen in a way that enhances and strengthens their relationship with each other. Parents are coached and supported to use important therapeutic skills that include empathetic listening and limit setting so that they can then enjoy a more positive relationship with their child or teen. This approach supports both the adults and children or teens in the family. Some sessions are adult focused, some involve the adults and the children or teens. Sessions are longer than normal therapy sessions and so they are charged at a different rate.
Non-Violent Resistance (NVR)
Is an approach developed to help parents and carers who are struggling with managing their child or teen’s behaviour and helps them build a safer family environment that is more emotionally aware. NVR supports the adults around the child and is adult only sessions, helping parents and carers to feel more confident and empowered to support their child or teen without getting into power struggles. NVR supports adults to respond effectively to effectively manage aggressive, violent, self-destructive, and controlling behaviours. NVR sessions involve just the adult and the therapist in sessions, not the child.
Individual Parent Sessions
Can be organised if you would like some additional support and this is available to exisiting, past or new clients. Please email me about this and your individual needs.
All these approaches can be used with children and teens and all family dynamics including blended, foster, and adoptive families and for children or teens in kinship care. NVR can also be used by professionals working with families.
Clinical Assessments
Are also a service that I offer to any parents or professionals who need support in this way for a child, teen or young person that I know. Please see my information on clinical assessments here for parents and carers or here for professionals.
If you are interested in any of these ways of supporting you or your family, please talk to me before we start sessions and we can work out a plan together.
